Basic Food: KEY STAGE 3

The Basic Food Course is primarily a practical subject area and where ever possible the groups will be completing food practical lessons. The aim is for students to develop food practical skills and an awareness of food commodities. The practical skills developed in Year 7 will be extended and reinforced in year 8. New skills will be introduced in year 8 to extend the students’ knowledge.

The programme of study includes a range of subjects which can be covered by staff, depending on time allocation.

The year 7 and 8 students do not have an equal allocation of time. A rotation of most groups occurs every term.

YEAR 7

(1 – 3 hours per fortnight)

Half term 1:

  • Development of practical skills.
  • Hygiene and safety requirements.
  •  Names and use of equipment.
  •  Food tasting sessions.
  • Healthy eating.

Half term 2:

  • Continuation of half term 1.

Half term 3:

  • Development of practical skills.
  • Hygiene and safety requirements.
  •  Names and use of equipment
  •  Food tasting sessions.
  •  Healthy eating.

Half term 4:

  • Continuation of half term 3.

Half term 5:

  • Development of practical skills.
  • Hygiene and safety requirements.
  • Names and use of equipment.
  • Food tasting sessions.
  • Healthy eating.

Half term 6:

  • Continuation of half term 5.

YEAR 8
