GCSE Hospitality & Catering (WJEC)

Introduction:

Hospitality enables students to develop a range of practical skills, life skills and in depth knowledge and understanding of the Hospitality and Catering Industry.  It prepares you for entry into employment in the Hospitality and Catering Industry.
Areas of study will include:

  • The Hospitality industry-accommodation; food and beverage; front of house
  • Types of products and services provided
  • Range of customer groups
  • Job roles, career opportunities
  • Range of equipment used in the industry

This course requires dedication and commitment but will be very rewarding and enjoyable for students who take an interest in this vocation.

You will experience lots of different activities and learning styles, practical work, team work, presentation skills and a chance to show off your computer skills whilst doing your assignments over the 3 years.

Assessment:

Your GCSE examination is divided into two sections-

  • 60% practical assessment
  • 40% written examination

You will get an opportunity to gain real insight into the Hospitality Industry through the many links which have been established.  This includes the Midland Hotel, Britannia Hotel as well as local restaurants like the Causeway and Stablegate.

Personal Attributes required:

  • A high level of commitment.
  • You will need to be able to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Work well on both written and practical tasks.

Future Career Plans:

A number of roles in the Hospitality and Catering industry, such as Chef, Menu Designer, Silver Service and a range of other interesting and varied jobs.

Homework Expectations:

There is an expectation that students will complete a range of written and research tasks throughout the course. Students will also be expected to evaluate practical sessions that take place during lessons.
