ICT: KEY STAGE 3

Key Stage 3

Students in year 7 and year 8 have 3 lessons of ICT over 2 weeks. The curriculum focuses on the fundamental building blocks of ICT skills required to help them progress through to KS4 if they choose to opt for ICT or Computing in year 9. Every student undertakes a condensed project each half term focussing on developing their skills in: database software, spread sheets, Desktop Publishing, Web Design, Multimedia, Programming, Graphics, Internet Safety and Word Processing. All of these units are assesed at their completion based on either a written or practical test.

Year 7

  • E-Safety – Students will learn about the importance of staying safe online. They will also learn about Computer Viruses and learn how to stay Healthy & Safe when using computers.
  • Graphic DesignStudents will learn the skills required to design and create magazine pages, using a wide range of image editing tools.
  • SpreadsheetsStudents will understand how to use Spreadsheets, and learn how to write simple calculations and formulas, such as IF formulas & conditional formatting. Students will learn how to create spreadsheet models by creating graphs to analyse data.
  • DatabasesStudents will learn what a database is, what data types are, and will learn how to set up their own database, including creating queries, forms and reports.
  • HTML – Students will understand the fundamental skills required to write a website in HTML. They will demonstrate a variety of different HTML tags by creating their own website.
  • Web DesignStudents will learn the fundamental skills required to build a website for a client. They will be given a set of client requirements, which include creating and editing graphics, and creating a website which is suitable for a specific audience and purpose.

Year 8

  • Graphic Design – Students will learn the skills required to design and create magazine pages, using a wide range of image editing tools. They will use vector and bitmap tools to develop graphic products for a healthy takeaway shop.
  • Impact of ICT in Society Students will learn about how ICT impacts on society; in particular, how ICT has changed the way we work, shop and entertain ourselves. They will also learn how Computers and the Internet have changed how people work, communicate and share information.
  • Computer ProgrammingStudents will understand how computer programs are created and understand how computers recognise data. They will learn how a computer breaks this information down into Algorithms and create a sequence of instructions in order to make a computer game
  • PythonStudents will understand how to use Python to learn how to write a Maths quiz program.
  • ICT Legal FrameworkStudents will learn about the importance of the Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act and ICT and Copyright, including Intellectual Property and Creative Commons Licenses.
  • Web DesignStudents will learn the fundamental skills required to build a website for a client. They will be given a set of client requirements, which include creating and editing graphics, and creating a website which is suitable for a specific audience and purpose.

 

Assessment is measured with practical assessments or written tests.
